HEIC

Use HEIC for local photo workflows when macOS or Windows provides a working system codec.

HEIC is a compact photo format commonly produced by Apple devices. Rastry uses Bun.Image’s operating-system backend for HEIC rather than bundling a separate decoder.

Platform support

HEIC input and output are available on macOS and Windows when the system codec is available. Windows may require the HEIF Image Extensions and, when requested by Windows, the AV1 Video Extension from Microsoft Store. Linux remains unsupported for HEIC and Desktop does not show the HEIC selector there.

Convert from HEIC

Terminal window
rastry photo.heic --to png --dry-run

The conversion preserves Rastry’s default safety rule: the HEIC original is never overwritten, and the generated output is planned before it is written.
